CAT DILR Strategy (99+ Percentile Roadmap)
DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) is the most unpredictable section in CAT. The goal is not to solve every set—it's to identify the easiest sets and solve them accurately. Many preparation guides note that solving around 2–2.5 sets (roughly 8–10 questions) accurately is often enough for a very strong percentile.
Phase 1: Build Fundamentals (2-3 Weeks)
Master the common DILR set types:
Logical Reasoning
- Linear Arrangements
- Circular Arrangements
- Floor Arrangements
- Selection & Distribution
- Games & Tournaments
- Venn Diagrams
- Network & Routes
- Scheduling
Data Interpretation
- Tables
- Bar Graphs
- Line Graphs
- Pie Charts
- Mixed Graphs
- Caselets
Daily Target
- 2 Easy LR Sets
- 2 Easy DI Sets
- 30 minutes analysis
Phase 2: Build Speed (4-6 Weeks)
Increase difficulty.
Daily:
- 4–5 Moderate DILR Sets
- Time limit: 20 minutes per set
- Maintain an error log.
Focus on:
- Diagram representation
- Table formation
- Logical deductions
- Mental calculations
Phase 3: CAT-Level Practice
Start solving:
- CAT 2017–2025 Previous Year Papers
- Sectional Tests
- Full-Length Mocks
After every mock:
- Solve skipped sets
- Find the easiest missed set
- Learn a faster approach
Mock analysis is often more valuable than taking additional mocks.
Exam-Day Strategy
First 3–5 Minutes
Read every set.
Ask:
- Can I understand the story?
- Is the data clean?
- Can I draw a table quickly?
Choose only the easiest set.
Next 15 Minutes
Finish Set 1.
If stuck for 3–4 minutes, leave it.
Never force a difficult set.
Remaining Time
Attempt:
- Set 2
- Then Set 3 only if time permits
Accuracy > Attempts.
Golden Rules
✅ Never start solving the first set immediately.
✅ Selection wins percentile.
✅ Skip difficult sets.
✅ Draw neat tables.
✅ Write all deductions.
✅ Avoid assumptions.
